How to Charge AirPods Without Case

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

Is the battery of your AirPods running low but you cannot find its charging case? We all know that Apple said that your AirPods could only charge on its charging case that’s why users who misplace their pods go to lengths just to find their lost charging case. It’s also your key to pair your AirPods with different devices. If one of your AirPods is inside the charging case, you can actually track it through the Find My app. Check our blog on How to Find My AirPods under FAQs on Missing AirPods. But what if you have 2 pods and searched everywhere but your charging case is nowhere to be found? We have been getting a lot of questions on how to charge without case so we came up with this guide for you.

How to Charge AirPods Without Case

As of the moment, the AirPods need a charging case to start charging. Some users have uploaded ways to go around a lost charging case like using a pin to directly charge the AirPods but please don’t do this. It might just destroy your AirPods causing its parts to get damaged or lose their ability to pair. There are also apps claiming that they can charge AirPods for a subscription price but these are all not Apple-recommended. We do not recommend it. Here are what we suggest on how to charge your AirPods without the case:

Purchase an original Apple AirPods charging case

To purchase another AirPods charging case, you need to contact Apple support. Let them know your AirPods model and serial number. You can check your serial number by going to Settings > [Your Name] > Scroll all the way down and select AirPods and you may see your AirPods’ serial number there. Alternatively, you can visit an Apple store to ask for help. You may also report online through this link. Select AirPods > Lost or Missing AirPods > Replace lost AirPods case.

The fee for a charging case replacement will range from $29 to $79 if you marked it as damaged. $29 for those with Apple Care+, $59 for a standard case, and $79 for a case that supports wireless charging. Prices differ if you mark it as lost or defective.

Purchase a charging case from a third-party seller

Although Apple would not recommend this, you may choose to do so to avoid the steep replacement prices. Just make sure it matches your AirPods model completely. You can purchase online or through an electronics shop. Common issues users encounter are that the case charges more slowly or the AirPods drain quickly. Another issue is that it may not be as reliable in resetting the AirPods, pairing, and using the FindMy feature.

Still, if you wish to do this option, you would need to do the following steps:

  1. Using your device, go to Settings > Bluetooth > AirPods i > Forget this Device

  2. Place your AirPods in your new charging case.

  3. Open the lid of the case, the status light should flash amber (or orange).

  4. Press and hold the pairing button and wait til it flashes white.

  5. Pair again with your device. Follow the steps that flash on your device.

These alternative AirPods charging cases can also range from a standard case in which you have a wired connection or wireless that enables you to charge with a QI-certified charging mat. If you wish to purchase a standard case, you may use cords that support a USB-to-Lightning connection or a USB-C-to-Lightning connection. The most efficient way of charging is to use an Apple adapter or have a wired connection to your Mac. As for the wireless charging case, check if the status light will turn on if you place your AirPods and the charging case on a QI-certified charging mat. If it changed to amber, then you should be okay.

As a short-term solution, borrow an original case from your family and friends

Just so you don’t fully drain your AirPods, you may also borrow a charging case of the same model from anyone. It should work just fine for charging.

How to Prevent Losing Your AirPods Charging Case

You may purchase an AirTag which is a Bluetooth tracker for your charging case. You can track your charging case anywhere and anytime with the AirTag.
